Choosing Between P5 and P10 LED Displays for Visual Performance
Pixel pitch is one of the first decisions made in any LED display project, and the choice between P5 and P10 modules frequently shapes both the visual outcome and the return on investment. The two specifications are separated by a single number, yet that gap determines how close an audience can stand before image detail begins to break down. Understanding where each option performs best is central to matching display requirements with an efficient budget.
The core technical difference: pixel density
The distinction between P5 and P10 is fundamentally physical. P5 denotes a 5mm gap between adjacent pixels, while P10 denotes a 10mm gap. Because pixel density scales with the square of that interval, halving the distance between pixels produces a fourfold increase in the number of pixels packed into each square meter.
| Specification | Pixel pitch | Pixels per square meter (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| P5 | 5mm | 40,000 |
| P10 | 10mm | 10,000 |
At an identical physical size, a P5 panel therefore renders finer image detail, smoother edges on graphics and clearer small text. The advantage is most pronounced at close range, where individual pixels on a P10 screen become visible to the naked eye.
Selecting by viewing distance
Viewing distance is the decisive factor in most specifications. A widely applied industry guideline holds that the pixel pitch in millimeters roughly equals the optimal viewing distance in meters. On that basis, P5 panels suit audiences positioned about five meters from the screen, while P10 panels are intended for viewers standing around ten meters away.
When P5 is the appropriate choice
- The audience is seated or standing relatively close to the screen.
- Content includes small text, intricate graphics or high-resolution video.
- The project requires a high level of image refinement.
- The venue allows viewers to pause and watch from a short distance.
When P10 is the appropriate choice
- The screen is mounted high or far back, placing the audience at a long viewing distance.
- The display is exceptionally large, so fine detail differences are imperceptible from afar.
- Content consists mainly of large type and full-scale advertising imagery.
- The budget is tightly controlled and cost efficiency is the priority.
Weighing performance against cost
P5 panels require greater manufacturing precision and a far larger number of LED lamps per square meter, so their cost per square meter is typically higher than that of P10. That premium is justified where the audience stands close enough to perceive the added detail.
For large outdoor installations viewed from a distance, specifying P5 without a clear justification adds expense without a corresponding visible gain. P10 keeps unit costs down while maintaining legibility at range, which makes it a common selection for large public advertising boards and building facade displays.
The decision ultimately rests on where the audience will actually be positioned rather than on the specification in isolation.
